I’ll keep this short. Retired a couple years back, we have most of our savings in an IRA at the brokerage. Nothing fancy, mostly index funds and a bond fund the advisor set up before he left. My wife has been watching the news and getting worried about where things are headed, and someone at church told her about American Hartford Gold. We got a kit in the mail from them a while ago and I think she wants me to call.

I am not sold on the whole idea of putting retirement money into gold at our age, but I promised I would at least look into it before saying no. What I cannot tell from their website is whether the company itself is one of the ones people have had problems with, or if the complaints I keep seeing are about a different outfit. If anyone here opened an IRA through them, how did the actual process go, and did anything come up later that you wish you had known going in. Thanks.

American Hartford Gold is the dealer. The IRA itself sits with a self-directed custodian they introduce you to, often Equity Trust. We get a thread every few weeks from someone who read about a CFTC case and assumed it was AHG; those cases involved different companies. Before you call, write down what you want to ask about fees and spread. Which custodian did the kit name?
