Hey everyone. I’m 48, a teacher in Fresno, and I have the 403b through the school district (traditional, that’s all they offer). My husband just started at a new company last month and they offered him a 401k with a roth option and a traditional option. He’s 51. We’ve never had to pick before, his last job was traditional only.

He’s going to put in enough to get the full match either way, which is 4%. The HR packet basically said “talk to a financial advisor” and we don’t really have one. I called our tax guy and he kind of shrugged, said it depends on where we think we’ll be in retirement, which honestly I don’t really know.

I keep going back and forth. We make maybe around $160,000 combined, nothing wild. Does anyone here just split it, half roth and half traditional? Or is that overthinking it?

The shrug from your accountant is the part worth pushing on. He has your actual numbers from last year’s return and can run both options with your husband’s HR packet in front of him. That’s the question he’s there for. Did he say why he didn’t want to work it out?
